The search for pregnant southern California woman Erin Corwin, 19, intensified over the weekend with more than 50 search-and-rescue workers joining the effort. She was first reported missing by her husband, a Marine, on June 29.
"You feel like you're walking in a nightmare," Lore Heavilin, Corwin's mother, told KESQ Palm Springs
. "We were going to go to the San Diego Zoo and Sea World. And she was so excited about that upcoming trip."
Corwin, who is three months pregnant, was last seen June 28 — the day before her husband, Jonathan Wayne Corwin, reported her missing. He said she left their home on the Twentynine Palms Marine base early that morning to scout out photogenic spots in Joshua Tree National Park. She and her mother planned to take pictures together in the park when Heavilin arrived from Tennessee to help celebrate her 20th birthday.

Police found Corwin's Toyota Corolla on the side of the road in Twentynine Palms on the following Monday.
After nearly a week of searching by land and air, the sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division-Homicide Detail joined the investigation, Fox News reported
"The specialized division was asked to assume the investigation because they felt that there were definite suspicious circumstances," said sheriff’s department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman. She said that the specialized team is skilled "when it comes to investigations that involve the possibility of foul play."
In speaking with People magazine
, Corwin's sister-in-law, DeeAnna Heavilin, said the news that she was missing, "was immediately concerning because she had already been gone for a day. She didn't start driving until she was 18 years old and she is 19 now and she has a terrible sense of direction, so our first thought was that she was lost."
In a news release, the sheriff's department described Corwin as white, 5-foot-2, 120 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. They said she has no history of medical or psychological issues.
