A U.S. Embassy's message to American citizens in Egypt urging them to be extra cautious due to incidents near the pyramids in Giza is being criticized by the nation's officials.

A ministry statement on Saturday says the warning is "baseless," according to the Associated Press.

Urgent: Is Obama Telling the Truth on IRS, Benghazi Scandals?

An embassy message earlier this week warned Americans to "elevate their situational awareness" when visiting the Egyptian pyramids because of a "lack of visible security or police" presence there.

The U.S. warning noted incidents of "angry groups of individuals surrounding and pounding" on cars with visitors, sometimes trying to open car doors.

The ministry insists the pyramids' area in Giza, Cairo's twin city, is "totally secure" and that the overall situation for tourists has improved.

Following the 2011 Egyptian uprising that ousted longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak, tourism took a sharp hit and security deteriorated.
