Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Tuesday warned if the Muslim Brotherhood has the opportunity to take over Egyptian rule it will, “and that is a dangerous thing.”
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Rumsfeld also said the extremist, autocratic rule in Iran is an example of what could happen in Egypt, and other Middle Eastern nations, experiencing signs of political upheaval.
“If you think of the Iran model, where there was a popular revolution, and it wasn’t the populace that ended up in charge – it was a very small, radical, extremist clique – that risk exists [in other Middle East countries],” said Rumsfeld, whose memoir, "Known and Unknown," was published Tuesday.
“The problem we have is there are many elements in a popular revolt. Among them are extremists, like the Muslim Brotherhood,” he said. “They tend to be not the largest, but the most extreme, the best organized, the best financed, and the most vicious.
“They are not there for democracy, they are not there for free political systems or free economic systems, and to the extent they have the opportunity to take over they will, and that is a dangerous thing.”
