Police say a Dallas man and his girlfriend were fatally shot in a condominium complex Monday morning after a dispute that involved where their pit bull's droppings always ended up.
Authorities said the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute with a downstairs neighbor, an older gentleman who they said is currently the main suspect in the case.
A police report identified him as 75-year-old Chung Kim. He faces charges of capital murder in the deaths of Jamie Stafford and Michelle Jackson, both 31.
Neighbors told a local CBS station the dead couple's pit bull often defecated on their balcony, and the droppings fell onto Kim's balcony.
Other reports say Kim complained that the couple intentionally dumped dog feces on his patio near the front door.
Police told the Dallas Morning News
that Jackson was shot outside the door of her balcony. Stafford, who was trying to escape over the edge of the balcony, was then shot. Both victims had multiple wounds and died at the scene.
Kim fled from the scene but police said they quickly found him. He is currently being treated at a nearby hospital for an unspecified condition, according to CBS.
Witnesses said three shots were fired around 8 a.m. on Monday. After a lull, five more shots were fired.
“I just know I heard a whole bunch of gunshots at 8 a.m. I dove over my son to protect him.” Neighbor Michael Issa told a Dallas-Fort Worth local CBS-DFW.
Jackson was the mother of five children, all younger than 10. Neighbors told the Morning News that she was a great mother whose first priority was her kids.
Child protective services told CBS-DFW that the children will live with relatives.
"This is very early in the investigation but it appears this may be the tragic result of a neighbor dispute," Dallas police said in a statement. "There is no threat to the general public from this event."
