In light of the Sandy Hook school shooting, the owner of a gun store in Texas will be offering a discount to educators wanting to get a concealed weapons license.

Crockett Keller, 66, of Kellers Riverside Gun Store in Austin, told KRLD radio in Dallas that the discount could help arm the nation's teachers.

“As we do with veterans, I would offer them a discount,” Keller said in a phone interview. “Our normal rate is $110.00, so I would give them a rate of $90.00. If they are teachers, we would be more than happy to do that.”

“We need to start thinking out of the box and deal with this violent culture,” he said. “We need to lobby our various state governments to allow teachers to be armed.”

Gayle Fallon with the American Federation of Teachers told CBS Dallas/Fort Worth the idea of arming teachers is “absurd.”

“In a lot of cases,” Fallon told the TV station, “the perpetrator is a kid. Look at Columbine, it was a 14-year-old kid. You tell me a teacher is going to look in the eyes of a 14-year-old and pull the trigger — it’s not in their emotional make up.”

The discount is not the first time Keller has made the news. In November 2011, he was cited in a New York Times article for an inflammatory radio ad he placed soliciting members for a concealed weapons class.

“If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner-in-chief, please do not take this class,” Keller said in the ad. “You’ve already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law. Also, if you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class. Once again, with no shame, I am Crockett Keller.”
