"Dhoom 3," a Hindi action thriller, broke records over the weekend when it took the title for biggest U.S. opening ever for a Bollywood film, grossing more than $31 million globally in just three days.

The third film in the "Dhoom" franchise is set in Chicago and once again chronicles the exploits of a pair of Indian cops, played by Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. But this time the duo is after a new villain — a flashy acrobat and illusionist named Sahir (Aamir Khan).

The movie opened Friday and raked in a record-breaking $3.3 million in North America alone. And that's only from the 236 theaters where "Dhoom 3" was distributed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The crime thriller also performed well in Dubai, Malaysia, Kenya, and the U.K.

"Dhoom 3's" debut also marked another milestone — it was the first Indian film ever to be released in IMAX.

"This was a fantastic movie by very skilled filmmakers and we're thrilled that this is our first venture into the Bollywood world. Given its success, we'll be doing more," IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster told The Reporter.

Though "Dhoom 3" is set in the U.S., the movie stays true to its Bollywood roots, the New York Times' Rachel Saltz wrote in her review.

"For all its New World-conquering bravura, 'Dhoom 3,' in which tears are courted and destinies forged before the opening credits roll, can't hide its Hindi-film heart.

"As circus master, Sahir creates a show that is pure Bollywood. Muscles bulging, he flies on a rope like Tarzan, before landing onstage in a glossy production number with trampolines, gyrating bodies and fire. Needless to say, the Great Indian Circus wows 'em in Chicago."
