Powerful conservative Sen. Jim DeMint is morphing his extremely successful Senate Conservatives Fund into a super PAC so that it can raise more money, sources tell Politico.

DeMint will have to formally separate himself from the fund, which is being renamed Senate Conservatives Action, so that it can make the switch. As a super PAC, there is no limit to the amount of money a group can raise and spend. So now the Senate Conservatives Action can go after bigger donations from the country’s wealthiest Republicans.

Under DeMint’s leadership, the fund has raised more than $17 million over the past three years to fight for a more conservative Senate. The move to a super PAC may give DeMint even more influence.

And his decision may spark a trend. “Throughout the country, there are a lot of mini-Sheldon Adelsons who have personal wealth and who may be attracted to a particular candidate, and I think that one way to help that candidate is to support a super PAC,” Republican election lawyer Jan Baran told Politico in March.

As for DeMint’s take on it, "If we're going to save this country, we have to elect more conservatives to the U.S. Senate," he said. "Making the Senate Conservatives Fund independent of me will allow it to do even more to elect the kind of leaders we need to repeal Obamacare and balance the budget."

While DeMint can’t formally be part of the super PAC, he can advise it, as long as Senate Conservatives Action doesn’t endorse him. It will continue to be run by veteran DeMint staffer Matt Hoskins.
