Conservative congressmen are urging their Republican leaders not to give up the store in negotiations with Democrats over lifting the $14.3 trillion debt limit. The conservatives want to make sure Democrats agree to a balanced-budget amendment and significant spending cuts before the GOP leaders agree to support a debt-ceiling increase, The Hill reports.

There is concern that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner might give in too easily.

More than 100 House conservatives sent Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor a letter Monday specifying which points should be demanded.

That includes discretionary and mandatory spending reductions to slice the deficit in half next year, a spending cap amounting to 18 percent of gross domestic product, and passage of a balanced-budget amendment.
