David Ortiz took a bat to the Camden Yards bullpen telephone, after a seventh inning strikeout call by Tim Timmons against the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, an outburst that forced the All-Star out of the contest.
Ortiz grew angry when home plate umpire Tim Timmons called a strike on a pitch that appeared high on a 3-0 count against Baltimore pitcher Jairo Ascencio, which denied Ortiz a chance for a walk, the Boston Globe reported
Ascencio came back to strike Ortiz out, which led to a verbal exchange. Ortiz then smashed the telephone with his bat and tried to come back on the field to continue his argument with Timmons.

Timmons ejected Ortiz as he was being restrained by teammates, coaches, and manager John Farrell.
"What I’m going to tell you is I have 17 years in the league and I don’t think I deserved to be disrespected like that," Ortiz told the Boston Globe after the game. "If you want to get respect from the player, then you respect the player, and that was horrible. Both of them pitches, not just the one, but the second strike, too.
"I don’t mind going to first base. So why do you have to call pitches like that a strike? I don’t pitch. I don’t play defense. I hit. You’re not going to take my at-bats away from me," Ortiz added.
Ortiz got into it with teammate Dustin Pedroia, a second baseman. Pedroia said he was trying to calm Ortiz down.
"I mean, guys get frustrated. It’s part of the game," Pedroia told the Boston Globe. "I wanted to make sure David didn’t get too bad, so he wouldn’t get suspended. He’s the biggest part of our lineup. We can’t lose David for one game. I’m sure it looked funny — the smallest guy out there yelling at the biggest guy — but it’s part of the game. I go down there and snap sometimes. It happens."
The game ended Ortiz's seven-game hitting streak, in which he was hitting .385 over the stretch. But Ortiz has not driven in a run or hit a home run since July 10. For the season, Ortiz is hitting .321 with 19 homers and 65 RBIs as of Sunday.
