The banana-thrower who hurled the fruit at FC Barcelona defender Dani Alves during Sunday's matchup against Atletico Madrid has been arrested.

David Campayo Lleo, 26, was arrested Tuesday and charged with a "breach of fundamental rights and civil liberties" for the racially charged insult, The Associated Press reported. He faces up to three years in prison if found guilty, and has also been dismissed from his position as a youth soccer coach.

"We have suffered this in Spain for some time," Alves told reporters after his team's 3-2 win over Madrid. "You have to take it with a dose of humor. We aren't going to change things easily. If you don't give it importance, they don't achieve their objective."

Video of Alves picking up the banana and taking a bite went viral online this week, spurring a Twitter campaign meant as a showing of solidarity.
