"Dancing With the Stars" premiered its 17th season Monday night with a whole new crew of celebrities and it's already clear who the fan favorites are and who might need a little work on their two-step.
Perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night was Valerie Harper, the 74-year-old best known for her role as Rhoda on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and later on the eponymous spinoff. Harper revealed earlier this year that she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer that gave her just months to live. Her doctors have since said she is near remission.
Harper and pro partner Tristan MacManus danced the foxtrot Monday, earning a score of 21.

"It's good to be alive," she said after her performance. "And it's even better to be dancing."
Bill Nye the Science Guy is clearly this season's fan favorite, but he'll need to work on his dancing if he wants to stay in the competition. Nye and partner Tyne Stecklein's cha-cha failed to win over the judges and the pair turned in the night's lowest score of 14.
Amber Riley from "Glee" delivered the best performance, tying the all-time first night score of 27 with her spot-on cha-cha with veteran dancer Derek Hough.
Producers saved another anticipated performance — Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi of "Jersey Shore" fame — for last. With a background in cheerleading and dance, Polizzi rocked her version of a cha-cha with pro Sasha Farber. They earned a score of 23.
Other competitors this season include former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, singer Christina Milian, actor Brant Daugherty, actress Elizabeth Berkley, "High School Musical" alum Corbin Bleu, comedian Bill Engvall, Ozzy's son Jack Osbourne, and "King of Queens" actress Leah Remini.
Twitter users were especially excited about Polizzi, Harper, and Nye.
The premiere also marked the start of a new show system. Gone is the Monday performance and Tuesday results format, replaced by a one-night-only schedule.
