New Crossroads Ads Target Senate Races in Florida, Ohio, Montana, NM

The potent advocacy group Crossroads GPS has begun a $4.2 million ad campaign to assist Republican Senate candidates in Florida, Ohio, Montana, and New Mexico.

This represents the group’s first foray into the Sunshine state, Politico reports. Florida is a key swing state, and with its large population of retirees, Medicare resonates as a major issue there.

“Florida’s seniors are facing a healthcare crisis,” the ad intones. “But in Washington, [Democratic Sen.] Bill Nelson’s been voting for the new health care law, which cuts Medicare spending by $700 billion, puts unelected bureaucrats between Florida’s 3 million Medicare recipients and the care they need.”

Nelson’s GOP opponent is Rep. Connie Mack. Real Clear Politics rates the contest as leaning toward Nelson. A poll conducted last week by CBS/New York Times/Quinnipiac shows Nelson leading 50 to 41 percent.

All four races may be crucial to Republican efforts to recapture control of the Senate. Four represents the number of seats the GOP must pick up to do so.

In New Mexico, Crossroads has produced mostly positive ads for Republican nominee Heather Wilson. But now the group is taking it to Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich over the issue of spending. “More Money Martin,” the ad calls him. “Big Washington spending is not helping New Mexico. And the more money Martin Heinrich is spending is part of the problem.”

Real Clear Politics tabs the race as leaning toward Heinrich. A poll conducted by FM3 Research earlier this month indicates he is ahead 50 to 41 percent, matching the Florida poll numbers.
