Democrats avoided a potential November embarrassment when primary voters in New York rejected firebrand former Black Panther Charles Barron’s bid to win the nomination for a House seat.
But even as he was defeated by more than 40 percentage points, Barron refused to congratulate his opponent, Hakeem Jeffries.
“At the risk of sounding like a sore loser, honesty compels me to say there will be no congratulatory statement . . . to the opposition tonight, only because of the way the campaign was run and the things they did to character-assassinate us,” he said, according to the
New York Post.
Barron, a member of the New York City Council, had been accused of being anti-Semitic and racially divisive as he tried to win the nomination in the heavily Democratic district in Brooklyn.
He had said that Israel has exhibited “terroristic behavior” and likened the country’s treatment of Gaza residents to Nazi concentration camps.
New York State Assemblyman Jeffries beat Barron by 71 percent to 28 percent. He will now run in a newly drawn district largely carved out of the one currently held by retiring 10-term Democrat Rep. Edolphus Towns.
