Hillary Clinton will not be at the Democratic National Convention next week.

The U.S. Secretary of State, the 2008 Democratic presidential candidate, will be half a world away from Charlotte, N.C., the site of where delegates will gather Sept. 4-6 to nominate President Barack Obama to a second term.

According to Reuters, Clinton’s itinerary will take her from the South Pacific to Asia to the Russian eastern port city of Vladivostok. This will be the first Democratic convention Clinton will have missed since 1968.

But former President Bill Clinton will give the speech on Sept. 5 that will formally nominate Obama, while the Clintons’ daughter, Chelsea, is attending both the Republican and Democratic conventions, according to the William J. Clinton Foundation.

“As secretary of state, she is no longer engaged in retail politics, but she remains a keen observer,” P.J. Crowley, a former Clinton White House staffer and State Department spokesman, tells Reuters about Hillary Clinton.

“I'm pretty sure she'll be closely monitoring what happens there. She has good sources, one in particular, who will be in a good position to tell her what happened.”
