Christie Sings Springsteen, Talks Politics to Jimmy Fallon

Wednesday, 05 Sep 2012 11:56 AM

By Sandy Fitzgerald

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie went on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night talk show Tuesday to talk politics and ended up singing Bruce Springsteen's “Thunder Road.”

Christie, a huge Springsteen fan, hit Fallon’s stage after attending the New Jersey rocker’s 130th concert, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

The Republican governor’s appearance on NBC's Fallon show was only his second ever on late-night television — but he laughed, sang, and talked his way through the eight-minute segment like a pro.

Christie also spent a little time attacking the Democrats, chatting about Clint Eastwood’s "empty chair" speech at last week’s Republican National Convention, and joking about his son leaving home for college.

The governor said he knew there was a problem with Eastwood’s speech when the Hollywood legend pointed to the empty chair he'd brought on stage and made the off-color remark, Romney "can’t do that to himself.”

Christie said he thought at the time, “OK, now we’re starting to go off the rails a little bit.”

The governor also related how an unexpected meeting with Mitt Romney backstage at the convention added some pressure to his keynote speech at the convention.

Christie said the GOP presidential nominee told him he would stay and watch only if the speech was going to be "really good."

Before his segment ended, Christie got in a dig at Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, calling her a “big part of the problem” when it comes to compromise in Congress. But at the same time he acknowledged that both parties are to blame for the gridlock.
