New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stepped up to a game at the Jersey Shore boardwalk and confidently sent the football through the tire on his first try to win President Obama a stuffed teddy bear Tuesday.

Laughing, Obama — who was 0-for-5 on the “Touchdown Fever” game — said, “That’s because he’s running for office.” He and Christie high-fived and clasped hands after Christie’s spot-on toss. A video of the President’s failed tosses and Christie’s win is on the Washington Post website.

The two political powerhouses were touring the Garden State to view recovery efforts along the shoreline that have been made since Hurricane Sandy tore through the area in October 2012. Although in opposite political parties, Obama and Christie have been friendly since the hurricane, which hit right before the 2012 election.

In fact, their friendliness after the hurricane, which also was evident throughout the tour, may have cost Christie support within his party, according to Time Magazine. Christie drew criticism when he praised Obama’s leadership after the storm and hugged the President. Then he cancelled an appearance with the Mitt Romney campaign to stay in New Jersey to oversee storm cleanup.

Obama’s visit was part of a campaign to encourage visitors to return to the Jersey Shore, which is recovering from devastating storm damage. The Shore and New York suffered $38 billion of damage from Hurricane Sandy.

If they ever let me have any fun I’d have some fun here,” the Guardian reported Obama saying on the boardwalk. “I was telling my staff on the ride over I could see being a little younger and having some fun on the Jersey Shore. I can't do that anymore. Maybe after I leave office.”

Christie is up for re-election and it is almost assured he’ll retain New Jersey’s top spot.
