Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is actively wooing business from China, despite the conflict this election season between lawmakers and business leaders over Chinese investments in the United States.

According to the Detroit News, Snyder met with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, expected to be China’s next leader, in Iowa in February to talk more investment in Michigan. The state already ranks seventh in the amount of money Chinese investors have pumped into states across the country.

“It’s all about creating jobs for Michigan families and bright futures for our kids,” Snyder said, which seemed to take issue with some in Michigan’s congressional delegation who argue that stronger business ties to China means less U.S. jobs.

According to the News, the Chinese have directly invested $637 million in Michigan since 2003. Texas and New York have received the most, $2.8 billion and $2.7 billion respectively, according to the Rhodium Group, a New York-based firm that monitors Chinese U.S. investments.
