Despite collecting thousands of dollars in donations and fees from speaking engagements, Charles Ramsey, the hero who became an online sensation after he claimed he helped free the three women in the Cleveland kidnapping case, is now broke and homeless,

Ramsey, 45, said he was fired from his job as a prep cook and forced to move out of his home because of all the attention he was receiving.

"I don't have an address, I don't live anywhere. I go from house to house, and friend to friend, to family member to family member," he told the Daily Mail. "What I've been doing for the past four weeks is wearing out my welcome with everybody who knows me. Some places I don't think I'm allowed to go back, I don't know why, I don't do nothing."

In May, Ramsey claimed he helped free Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight from Ariel Castro's basement where they had been held captive for nearly a decade. His colorful television interviews and one-liners, which inspired an auto-tuned YouTube viral video, made him an instant celebrity.

Ramsey received an estimated $15,000 in donations from the public and has done appearances across the country, sometimes garnering as much as $7,500 per event. He also reportedly started a T-shirt business on the side, hawking tops with his face on them for $25 a pop.

But after dropping $8,000 on a BMW and paying down some of his debts, Ramsey is crying broke and pleading for work.

"All my jobs I ask for are in the kitchen so I'm not even in the front of the house, so you won't even see me. I'm behind a wall somewhere," he told the Mail. "Just pay me, that's all."

Some of Ramsey's former neighbors in Cleveland, however, aren’t buying his story.

Aurora Marti, 75, says it was her and two others who really came to the victims' aid.

"Charles did nothing to help Amanda [Berry]. It was me and two other people, Angel Cordero and Altagracia Tejera," Marti told the Mail. "I couldn't open the front door of her house because I've got arthritis. Angel pulled it open with his hands and told Amanda how to push it open from inside, and she got out. Amanda did not use Charles' phone like he said and she did not give him a hug like he said.

"Charles has been living it up, he's been drinking and smoking. He bought a new BMW and came by a few weeks ago at night telling my son that he was going to be rich. He made a T-shirt with his face on it that he was selling for $25. I told my neighbor to buy one so I could burn it. He's been to Washington, New York, Florida. He's been everywhere. He's just been telling lies. He wants the money."
