Some Texas Democrats plan to draft San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to run for governor in 2014, according to the San Antonio Express-News
Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Manuel Medina launched the draft Castro movement last week.
Medina said the move is an attempt to use Castro’s rising national name recognition to strengthen the party’s position in Texas "because we believe he's the future of the state."
He added that the party’s central committee members, who represent the San Antonio metropolitan area, were eager to support the draft campaign, which was unveiled on October 9.
Castro has been extremely popular since he delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention last month. But he has insisted that if re-elected as mayor he has no plans to pursue any other office until his next term expires in 2017.
But Medina said Democrats are hoping to change his mind.
"There are a lot of people that will tell the mayor that it's not the right timing," he explained. "What we're saying is we'll create the timing"
