As news of a shooting on Capitol Hill swirled, lawmakers took to Twitter to make assurances about their safety, but Rep. Tim Griffin sent a tweet that’s bringing him a lot of grief.

Griffin (R-Ark.) first sent a tweet saying “Gunshots outside the capitol,” and followed it with “Stop the violent rhetoric President Obama Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. #disgusting.”

Although the tweet was removed from his feed, screen shots of the it are showing up around the Internet and inciting an outpouring of venom against the congressman.

One Arkansas resident was clearly embarrassed by Griffin’s posts:

BuzzFeed reported that Griffin regretted the tweet.

“No one but the shooter is to blame,” Griffin said in a text message to BuzzFeed. “We are still processing information about this shooting, but as I have been saying for days, we all need to choose our words wisely because violent rhetoric only coarsens our culture, creates an atmosphere of incivility and is not helpful. I tweeted out of emotion but agree that the timing was not helpful.”

Not helpful in general, and probably not helpful for Griffin’s next campaign.

A lockdown on Capitol Hill following the gunshots was lifted.

Quoting a source, the Chicago Tribune reported that a car apparently hit a security barrier and was chased by police. The woman driving the car was shot and killed by police; a child apparently in the car was reported to be unharmed.

A police officer was also reportedly injured.
