Canadian Judge Bernd Zabel has been suspended for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in court the day after last year’s U.S. presidential election.

Zabel said he wore the hat as a joke but that it was “ill-considered” and apologized for his actions, The Hill reported.

The Ontario judge was apparently commenting on his prediction that Trump would win the election, The Washington Post reported, but some took offense to his actions and 81 people complained about him to the Ontario Judicial Council, which heard the case against him last month.

Zabel was suspended without pay for 30 days and formally reprimanded after the council found he “violated the fundamental principle that the judiciary must remain above and removed from politics,” the Post reported.

Zabel could have been removed from office if the panel had so decided, but it took into consideration his 27 years of “unblemished and exemplary service on the bench,” the Post reported.

Judges in Canada are appointed, not elected, and are not allowed to donate to political parties or participate in any political activities.

“A reprimand and suspension is an appropriate acknowledgement that Justice Zabel’s action had an adverse impact upon public confidence in the judiciary,” legal director of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund Kim Stanton, who was one of the complainants, said, The New York Times reported.

Zabel is “anxious to get back to work,” his lawyer Guilia B. Gambacorta said, the Times reported.

The Twitter users who paid attention enough not to assume the judge was from the U.S. were split down the usual pro-/anti-Trump lines.
