Many political commentators have compared the Republican presidential race this year to the drawn out Democratic contest between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in 2008 — but according to Politico,  it is actually beginning to look more like the Democratic battle of 1992.

In that race it was clear by April that Bill Clinton would take the prize, but Jerry Brown refused to give up. Similarly now, it is becoming increasingly likely that Mitt Romney will snag the nomination. But Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are not throwing in the towels.

The Republican establishment is coalescing behind the former Massachusetts governor.

“After a long and grueling primary, it is clear that Mitt Romney is the best candidate to face President Obama and fix the mess of his one and only term,” said House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy. Conservatives such as Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania have turned his way too.

“I think the primary is over,” South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has stayed neutral, told CNN Sunday. “Romney will be the nominee. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. But she’s warming up.”

With a delegate majority out of the question for Santorum and Gingrich, their hopes lie on a brokered convention, but the party doesn’t appear ready for an intense, internecine struggle, Politico said.
