Cameron Diaz is joining the cast of "Annie" to play Miss Hannigan, the mean mistress who runs the orphanage, in a Hollywood remake due to be released next Christmas.

MSN Entertainment's The Wrap reports a source familiar with the project says Diaz is on board for the role, unlike Sanda Bullock, who reportedly turned it down twice.

The role is not likely to be a “crazy profitable” one for the actress, Screen Fury reported.

Diaz should find the role of a harsh headmistress an interesting transition from her lead in “Bad Teacher,” a 2011 film about a middle school teacher who drinks, smokes dope, and cusses at her students after losing her sugar-daddy boyfriend.

Diaz will be joining actors Jamie Foxx in a supporting role and Quvenzhane Wallis from “Beasts of the Southern Wild” as the lead in the new movie, Screen Fury reports. Will Smith and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter are among the producers, MSN Entertainment said.

The MSN site invited readers to post their opinions on its Facebook page as to whether Diaz “has what it takes” for the role. Reactions were mixed.

“Not at all,” wrote Matthew Bernard, whose Facebook page describes him as a creator/writer/executive producer at Spin the Bottle.

Others, though, were more concerned with — and divded on — her overall acting ability.

“She does not have the acting skills for even the most inane role,” wrote one person.

“She could play a doorknob and still be great,” wrote another.
