Burger King Baby: It Was 'Very Overwhelming' Meeting Biological Mother

By Ken Mandel   |   Friday, 11 Apr 2014 12:50 PM

The woman dubbed the Burger King baby has had an emotional, "very overwhelming" few weeks after reuniting with the birth mother who left her in a fast-food restaurant bathroom 27 years ago.

Katheryn Deprill, a Pennsylvania emergency medical technician, appealed to the public on Facebook last month to help her find her biological mother. The married mother of three was found in the Allentown, Pa., Burger King in September 1986 and later adopted.

"You just wonder where you come from," Deprill said in an appearance on the "Today" show this week. "I have a wonderful family that, what I've said from Day 1, I would never want to replace them. But being adopted, it's just a part of you is missing, and unless you're adopted, you really just don't understand that."

Cathy Pochek, Deprill's biological mom, got word of the viral postings and came forward last month. The mother and daughter had their first adult meeting a couple weeks ago.

"I was extremely nervous," Pochek told "Today." "I knew I was at the advantage, because I had seen interviews that she had done, and I was just so proud of her, and how articulate she was in expressing her feelings, and grateful for her mom for a beautiful childhood that she gave her."

Pochek, 44, said she was raped when she was 16 years old, but kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone, even her parents. She gave birth alone in her bedroom, and then brought her daughter to the Burger King.

She said she hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale for young girls.

"If we can help some other girl who is in the situation that I was in, it's worth a little bit of judgment that people might bring upon us. If it's just one girl that we can help, it's worth it," Pochek said.

Deprill and Pochek are now exploring their budding relationship and realizing they have more in common than they previously thought. The women both work as emergency medical technicians, drive the same car, and even have almost the same name (Catherine Anne and Katheryn Ann). Deprill also revealed that Pochek babysat Deprill's husband when he was young.
