Britain will leave the European Union after voters passed the Brexit referendum by 52-48 Thursday, a move that triggered the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and sent global financial markets into a tailspin.

"The EU for its part will be economically and politically damaged, facing the departure not only of its most free-market proponent but also a member with a U.N. Security Council veto and powerful army," Reuters reported. "In one go, the bloc will lose around a sixth of its economic output."

Here are 13 reaction photos of the historic Brexit vote.
