A 6-year-old Alaska boy who rode three miles down a highway on the roof of his parents' car Sunday sustained only minor cuts and bruises when he tumbled off.

The boy reportedly climbed on top of his family's minivan and held onto the luggage rack as his unsuspecting parents drove from their home to the Parks Highway about 10 miles north of Wasilla. The driver of the vehicle continued on, but a passer-by stopped and brought the child to a nearby gas station and called 911.

We think the kid was riding on the roof where there are bars," Alaska State Trooper Beth Ipsen told the Anchorage Daily News. "He has apparently done it before."

One of the boy's parents picked him up at the gas station after another family member reported him missing from the home, according to police.

The incident is being treated as an accident by authorities, the Daily News said, and no charges or traffic violations were filed.

The story drew a range of comments from readers on the Huffington Post's website.

"He was trying to get away from Sarah Palin in Wasilla," one person wrote.

"Says he has climbed on the roof before," another posted. "After the first time mom and dad should have learned to keep watch."

"What the heck? How did the parents not know he was up there?!"

"His parents didn't know he was up there?" someone else commented. "Lord, kids I'm telling you they will try stupid things. I'm just glad someone was there to get him the help that he needed."
