Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly said his tax dollars “mean something to me,” and he’s not willing to give up more of them unless the federal government runs more efficiently and honestly.

Obama administration officials “don’t watch the money,” O’Reilly said during an appearance Wednesday night on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” “They just bid it out.”

O’Reilly agreed that revenue must be raised but said coming after the rich to do so isn’t fair.

“I don’t mind paying 40 percent, but first, they’re going to have to stop wasting the money,” he told Stewart in an animated, barb-exchanging interview. “You’ve got to downsize the government. It’s insane. I want efficiency and honesty in all areas.”

Stewart asked O’Reilly, who was on the program to promote his new book, “Killing Lincoln,” whether it’s that onerous for someone like him to make $3 million a year instead of $3.5 million.

“We shouldn’t act like returning to the tax rate of the ’90s is class warfare on par with Lenin and Marx,” Stewart said.

O’Reilly replied: “I’ll pay the higher tax bracket if they start to cut and watch the dough. That’s fair.”
