Bill McGillis has been hired by Southern Mississippi University as the new athletic director, the school announced Friday.

Bill McGillis, 50, comes to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles after six years as an associate athletic director at South Florida. Bill McGillis worked mostly with the football, baseball and softball programs and also was responsible for marketing, ticket sales, licensing, merchandising and communications, according to the Associated Press.

Bill McGillis replaces Jeff Hammond as AD. Hammond's contract was allowed to expire on June 30.

McGillis was the athletic director at Evansville from 2002-07.

Southern Mississippi president Rodney Bennett said the new AD Bill McGillis is a "seasoned and experienced athletic administrator who has a proven record of helping student-athletes accomplish their academic and athletic goals" in a statement.
