Is Nebraska Republican senatorial hopeful Ben Sasse deceiving a key financial backer or the many conservatives who have given him a significant lead in the red state primary?
That's the question being posed by Policy Analyst Joe Herring, a contributor to The Daily Caller
, who in an op-ed on Monday attempts to shed light on Sasse's stance on illegal immigration.
According to polls taken earlier this month, Sasse is leading in the race for the Senate seat
left vacant by Republican incumbent Mike Johanns.

But Herring says the 42-year-old president of Midland University appears to hold two positions that though not mutually exclusive are generally at odds with one another — construction of a wall to stop the flow of illegal immigration and complete amnesty for all illegals currently living in the United States.
On his website, Sasse writes
that he is in favor of building a wall across the U.S.-Mexican border writing, "We must secure the border. End of story."
"Neither party has been willing to get serious about border security, dating back to the mid-'80s when a Republican president agreed to amnesty in exchange for promises of securing the border later. It never happened." Sasse continues on his site.
While claiming to be a candidate tough on illegal immigration, Sasse is receiving money from Republican businessman Mike Simmonds who, according to Herring, has a litmus test for all candidates he donates to that includes being in support of "complete amnesty" for every illegal immigrant in the U.S.
"The question begs an answer. How did this self-acclaimed anti-amnesty, tough on illegal immigration candidate end up with the maximum allowable donation from 'litmus test' Mike Simmonds? It would seem he either lied to Mr. Simmonds then, or has been lying to the voters all along," Herring writes.
The Daily Caller's observations regarding Sasse's apparent contradiction comes just one week after an Inquisitr op-ed
accused the candidate of creating a "facade to cover up glaring shortcomings" while addressing the belief that he is secretly harboring liberal stances
According to the Inquisitr opinion piece, Sasse joined forces with the city council of Fremont City, Nebraska, in 2010 to attempt to repeal a local ordinance that required all renters to provide proof of legal citizenship.
Sasse also demonstrated "questionable political sensibilities" by conspiring with local officials to overturn the public vote, the op-ed said.

"According to the emails and leaked records requested by [political blogger Chris] Scott, influxes of campaign funds were donated to Sasse from major players in an effort to repeal the ordinance," the op-ed stated. "Many of them turned around and directly contributed to Sasse's campaign fund before he officially announced his intention to run for the incumbent senate seat."
Neither Sasse nor Simmonds has responded to requests made by Herring for comment on the apparent contradiction and to clarify the issue.
