A new bacon app from Oscar Mayer lets iPhone users awaken to the delicious smell of their favorite breakfast food.

The electronic magic happens with a device called a dongle, which plugs into smartphones, and emits a puff of bacon smell. The free app provides the sizzling sound of bacon cooking.

The device, though, can’t be bought and Oscar Mayer is giving away only 4,700 of tthem on its “Wake Up and Smell the Bacon” website. The fun website takes a dramatic view of bacon.

“Cured for twelve tender, loving hours, our bacon stands the test of time and the depth of space,” the website says. Pictures of roses formed from bacon and close-ups of the sizzling strips will make mouths water.

To win a dongle, users have to fill out a brief survey about what they love about bacon. More often than not, the website then pulls up an apology video saying the user didn’t win.

“My heart aches for you,” intones a properly horrified actor. “But for more chances to win you can submit additional applications, and if you decide to stay in touch with us, you’ll be one to the first to hear about our next bacon innovation.”

Excited bacon fanatics went online to express their desire for Oscar Mayer’s app.

Bacon aside, scent technology may soon be available for all smartphone users. Japanese company Scentee developed an accessory to diffuse scents and is working with chef Andoni Luis Aduriz of Mugaritz restaurant to create an app for users to smell his dishes, Canoe Technology said.
