Army Guards Replace Sailors at Guantanamo

Tuesday, 21 Aug 2012 11:11 AM

By Andra Varin

Soldiers have been replacing sailors as guards at the prison camp for foreign terror suspects at the  Guantanamo Bay U.S. Navy base in Cuba, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

As the Army pulled out of Iraq and began plans to withdraw from Afghanistan, returning soldiers have been assigned to guard duties at the detention center and sailors have been returning to sea, the Herald said.

“Nearly all the guard force in the camps is the regular Army or Army National Guard,” said Army Lt. Col. Tod Breasseale, a Defense Department spokesman.

He said despite the guard personnel changes, Guantanamo remains a Navy base, adding there is “nothing nefarious here.”

There are 168 foreign nationals being held at the Guantanamo detention center.
