Angry Birds are flying into deep space — and the top of the digital sales charts thanks to a combined effort with Star Wars.
Angry Birds Star Wars is the newest version of the wildly popular mobile game and it’s as viral as ever.
The game’s Swedish developer Rovio announced Thursday that less than three hours after the game’s launch, it was atop the U.S. app charts. It also made it to the top of the U.K. app charts for both iOS and Android systems.
The game pits the familiar, colorful birds of the series as the Rebel Alliance, battling the evil Imperial force of galactic pigs. Here, the birds get light sabers and the use of the force in battling their new cosmic foes.
It’s not a total stretch from the game’s original premise, where the wingless birds were flung from slingshots into the pigs’ shelters.
“Angry Birds Star Wars made the jump to hyperspace yesterday with a phenomenal launch. Within 2.5 hours of launch, the app soared to #1 in the US iOS App Store, blasting away all of our previous records,” the company wrote in a blog post.
It’s not the first time Angry Birds has partnered with a film franchise to increase visibility.
In 2011, Rovio launched Angry Birds Rio, to coincide with the release of the animated movie Rio. It still is one of the top-downloaded apps available. Other versions of the game include holiday, seasons, and space.
As for Star Wars, the release of the game seems be a happy accident, next to news that the film franchise will soldier into yet another trio of films.
