The movie focuses on the guitar legend's rise to stardom in the year before his 1967 appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Hendrix's sister, Janie, denied permission to use any of her brother's music in the film, as performed by him, so writer/director John Ridley inserted covers from artists including The Trogs, Muddy Watersm and The Beatles.
Ridley also wrote the 2014 Academy Awards' Best Picture, "12 Years A Slave."
"All Is By My Side" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and will be shown in the U.S. for the first time next week at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.
Actress Imogen Poots also appears in the movie as Linda Keith, whom the movie claims once dated Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. One of Hendrix's instrumental songs is titled "Sending My Love to Linda," and is believed to be inspired by her.
The movie begins with a backup guitarist named Jimmy James playing small New York clubs, and culminates with "Jimi" being invited to the historic Monterey Pop Festival.
