Amy Robach Back on ABC Job, To Work During 4 Months of Chemo (Video)

Amy Robach, the ABC News correspondent who was diagnosed with breast cancer after an on-air mammogram in October, returned to work Thursday to talk about her recent double mastectomy and the long road ahead.

Robach, 40, was originally scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy last month but after doctors found a second malignant tumor, she decided to have both breasts removed. During the procedure, surgeons discovered that the cancer had spread to one of her lymph nodes, meaning she'll have to undergo four months of chemotherapy.

"That was the devastating news for me," Robach told her colleagues Thursday on "Good Morning America." "When I woke up, the first question I asked was, 'Did it spread to my lymph nodes?' because that's the difference between chemo and no chemo."

She starts her first round on Dec. 16, but said she plans to work through it just like colleague and cancer survivor Robin Roberts did.

"You give me strength, Robin, because it is important to get up and have something to do each day, even if you don't feel great," Robach said. "Some people have it harder than I do, so I will take it hour-by-hour.

"What it forces you to do is live in the moment and I think that's a good lesson for everyone. There are days where if you really start to let your mind wander, it's fairly devastating. But you keep your head together. You come into work. You hug your friends and you're thankful to be where you are with your family and the people who matter."
