Four people received minor injuries when several cars of the New York City-bound Amtrak Crescent carrying 218 passengers and crew derailed early Monday in a semirural area of South Carolina.

The derailment of the Amtrak passenger train from New Orleans occurred at 12:10 a.m. EST about six miles south of Spartanburg, when about seven passenger cars in the formation went off the tracks but stayed upright, Spartanburg County Deputy Fire Marshal Tony Barnett said by telephone.

"There are no cars overturned," Barnett told The Associated Press. He said he was calling from the scene in a semi-rural area where railway officials, firefighters, sheriff's officials and emergency first-responders were on hand.

Barnett said there was no indication of anyone being seriously hurt, but that four passengers with minor injuries had to be transported from the derailment site for further evaluation as a precaution. He had no further word on their condition.

He said 207 passengers and 11 crew members were on board the train shortly before daybreak Monday and the train had full power, while food and drink available also were available in the dining car. He said plans were being made Monday morning to bus the passengers elsewhere.

The Crescent has train has two locomotives and nine cars. He said the derailment only involved seven of the passenger cars, adding the two locomotives, one remaining passenger car and a baggage car at the back of the formation stayed on the tracks.
