A former Republican senator from New Hampshire cautioned that despite all the hoopla over who’s in or who’s out of the 2012 GOP presidential nomination race, the process is just the beginning. Many of the recent announcements, including that of Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniel’s decision not to run, won’t be important come next year, said John E. Sununu in an Op-Ed published today in The Boston Globe.

sununu, gop, nomination, process“The New Hampshire primary isn’t about announcements or first impressions, and it will not be decided in May or June,” said Sununu, who is the son of former White House chief of staff to President George H.W. Bush and former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu.

“With Daniels’s decision, the field may finally be set, but the long march has barely begun.”

He said there’s a reason that the GOP field is wide-open.

“Right now, that’s something of a self-fulfilling prophecy: The field is open because most voters and activists have yet to commit to a candidate; they haven’t committed to a candidate because the field is still open,” he said.
Sununu said all the punditry, polls and speculation now won’t matter, not at least until the fall.

“New Hampshire’s summer calendar was made for a field like this. Candidates will navigate long days at Republican committee barbeques, backyard events, and fairs,” he said.

"At times, it might feel as though no one is paying attention; at times they may wish no one was paying attention. But all over the state, they’ll be pressed to lay out a clear message and convince voters that they have what it takes to be president.”
