Republican Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine is urging her fellow Senate Finance Committee members to get a jump on the so-called deficit reduction “super committee” by producing their own list of tax reform recommendations as soon as possible.
In a letter earlier this week to Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and ranking Republican Orrin Hatch of Utah, Snowe said the finance panel has “a unique opportunity to provide substantial guidance on tax reform that will help generate jobs and economic prosperity.”
Snowe suggested that waiting on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, known as the “super committee,” to organize would be a mistake because the finance committee is “a key congressional panel” that already “has the privilege and prerogative to speak clearly and forcefully on a broad range of significant fiscal and tax-related issues.”
She added that holding finance hearings as quickly as possible will allow the joint committee to benefit from “our unique expertise and deep experience on these issues.”
