Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has thrown his support behind the Senate candidacy of Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel. Rubio told a crowd at Dayton’s Wright State University that Mandel’s election is crucial to deciding the direction of the country.

In an interview with WHIO-TV, Rubio said the 2012 election is very important.

“Ohio is a critical state in our country and probably one of the most critical swing states,” he said. “Josh gives not just Ohio but America the opportunity to send someone to the Senate that I know will help us recapture all the things that made America great for the last century.”

Local media repeatedly noted Rubio’s star power and the Dayton Daily News wrote that Rubio “is considered by many to be the front-runner for the Republican vice presidential nomination.”

“You’re not just electing another senator; you may very well be electing the deciding vote over who the next majority leader is,” Rubio said at the rally, according to the Daily News. “You want tax reform ... you want to repeal or replace ‘Obamacare’ ... you want to save Medicare and Social Security, you can’t do it with the people who are in there now. It does us no good to win the White House if Harry Reid is still in charge of the Senate.”
