Romney: I Would Separate Religion and Policy

Mitt Romney appears to be diverging from other Republican presidential candidates in separating his faith from his potential policies in the White House. Asked by CNN's Piers Morgan whether he would be able to wall off his Mormon beliefs from his policy actions as president, Romney answered, "Absolutely. You don't begin to apply doctrines of a religion to responsibly guiding a nation or guiding a state," ABCnews.com reports.

Discussing social issues, Romney noted he is pro-life, in favor of gay rights, but opposes gay marriage. Morgan asked him "What is the Mormon position on homosexuality being a sin?"

Romney’s response: "I'm not a spokesman for my church. And one thing I'm not going to do in running for president is become a spokesman for my church or apply a religious test that is simply forbidden by the constitution.”
