Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says he has the tools to make America great again, while President Barack Obama doesn’t “have a clue” on how to revitalize the economy. The former Massachusetts governor also said in an interview aired Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that taxing entrepreneurs will kill job creation.

Host Joe Scarborough noted that while Romney has been praised for his performances in debates, there has been some question as to whether he has the wherewithal to become president. Romney was asked how he can prove he can rise to the occasion and beat Obama.

“I’ll talk about my passion for this country, my concern that we are in an extraordinarily critical time in America’s history, and that I have the answers for what it takes to get us back to restore the greatness that has always been America,” Romney said. “And our president may be a nice guy, but our president doesn’t have a clue when it comes to getting this economy going again.

“Basically, he doesn’t understand how the private sector works, how it is that entrepreneurs decide to invest their life savings to start a business,” he said. “He thinks if you have cash in your balance sheet it means you are going to hire people — no, you hire people if you have customers.”

Romney said since he has spent most of his life in the business world, he knows what it takes to make America competitive, “so we can create jobs again.”

Scarborough asked that as a president who believes in minimal government interference in business what would Romney do to drive demand.

“Very simple: You make America the most attractive place in the world for entrepreneurs, for innovators, for investors — that’s what got us going in the first place” Romney said. “We’re going to make sure our company, our employer tax rates are competitive globally — we’re going to have regulators and regulations that encourage the private sector rather than crush it. We’re going to have trade policies that open markets for America — we’re going to clamp down on China when they cheat, or other cheaters.

“We’re going to have energy policies that give us energy independence so we’re investing here,” he said. “We’re going to keep the NLRB from penalizing businesses that want to build new factories in the U.S.”

Romney said he wants to instill policies that won’t continue to stymie job creation.

“I know that if we say: ‘Look, those that are creating enterprises and building new businesses, we’re going to take more of their money,’ you’re going to kill job growth,” he said. “If one’s priority is to punish highly successful people, then vote for the Democrats — if one’s priority is to get people working again, then vote for me.”
