Florida GOP Gov. Rick Scott recently signed a law making it more difficult for third-party groups, including unions and the League of Women Voters, to operate voter registration drives. The idea was to eliminate fraudulent registration practices. But Scott is taking heat from critics who say the new rules are really designed to prevent students, blacks, and Hispanics from voting, The Hill reports.

The law also reduces the number of days for early voting.

"This law has created, really, a draconian, very broad, ambiguous bureaucracy that is going to make it impossible for volunteers to continue our voter registration work," Deirdre Macnab, head of the League of Women Voters in Florida, told The Hill.

Some Democrats are worried the new regulations will reduce President Barack Obama’s re-election vote total in Florida next year.

However, some Democrats contend that Gov. Scott’s increasing unpopularity will help the president's re-election effort.
