Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., let then-Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., know in 2009 that the husband of Ensign's mistress wanted to make public the affair that torpedoed Ensign’s Senate career last month, according to a Senate ethics committee report released Thursday, Politico reports.
Doug Hampton — then one of Ensign’s top staffers — sent an email to Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly asking for a meeting to discuss the affair and shared that email with Santorum while asking him for help, the report says.
It isn’t clear why Hampton went to Santorum, who left the Senate in 2007.
Hampton previously suggested that Santorum learned of the email to Kelly because he was a commentator at Fox News, but the ethics report says Hampton contacted Santorum himself.
Santorum, who likely will run for president next year, wasn’t accused of any wrongdoing.
