Rangel Crashes Perry NYC Event

Tuesday, 20 Sep 2011 12:01 PM

By Dan Weil

Texas Gov. Rick Perry encountered a surprise attendee when he visited Papasito’s Bar in Harlem Monday to meet with local business leaders — Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel, who represents the neighborhood. Rangel quipped that he “had no idea it was a Republican event,” CBSNews.com reports.
Rangel proceeded to disparage the field of Republican presidential candidates.
“I think that the Republicans have a major problem with their candidates,” he said. Asked if that includes Perry, Rangel responded, “You bet your life. I think he’s the best thing going for President Obama, but I’m a Democrat.”
Lenin Lopez, who runs a café on the same block as Papasito’s, said he was one of about 50 people in the meeting with Perry. The Texas governor spoke about taxes and employment, Lopez said.
Lopez said most of the attendees were Democrats.
But organizer Fernando Mateo said it was “historic that Perry would come up here instead of staying in midtown or Wall Street.”
