Bolton: US Should Be On Alert

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton says the United States should be under high alert from terror attacks because of the killing of Osama bin Laden. Bolton also told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Wednesday that Pakistani leaders must be careful not to appease terrorist elements.

“We should definitely be on alert. I think there's every prospect that al-Qaida elements or some of the quasi-dependent units will take this as an opportunity to launch an attack against Americans or those overseas,” Bolton said. “Hopefully we can defeat it but we would be foolish not to prepare for it.”
Van Susteren said that in her interview with Pervez Musharraf Wednesday he said Pakistanis not knowing where bin Laden was hiding was incompetence, not deceitfulness.
“He is half right, it was incompetence on their part and ours, as well,” Bolton said. “But there’s little doubt that [Pakistan’s intelligence agency] ISI provided the infrastructure that allowed bin Laden to move around there for six years.
“And I think the real issue is not whether ISI was aiding him, but how far up the chain of command of the regular military it was known, because the higher up it goes, the more difficult it is for us to justify supporting this government,” he said. “Although when it comes down to it, I don't think we have any choice but to try to keep them on our side. If we throw them over to the other side, they will take their nuclear weapons with them.
“For many of the ISI leaders, this is part of their ideology too — they are radical jihadists — the military is infiltrated with people like that,” Bolton continued. “President Musharraf that you had on was an ally of ours, but he lives in a difficult world. This is the lesser of two evils we face in Pakistan. The problem for people like Musharraf, when they appease the radicals, they are setting the stage for their own destruction. That's what we have to impress on them.”
