A Republican-drawn redistricting map in Ohio is likely to prompt a family feud between two of the state’s longest serving and widely known Democratic members of Congress, according to a report Thursday in The Plain Dealer.
It appears that Reps. Dennis Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur will be facing off in the Democratic primary next year because the new map drawn up by the GOP-controlled state assembly has lumped them into the same district.
According to the newspaper, the state’s Democratic lawmakers say they plan to challenge the redistricting plan with a possible ballot initiative. But in the meantime, Kucinich and Kaptur have informed supporters and possible contributors of their plans to seek re-election in the redrawn district that includes portions of Cleveland and Toledo.
“What they have done here is macabre,” Kaptur told the newspaper, referring to the GOP remap. But Kaptur, who serves on the House Appropriations Committee and has been in Congress for nearly 29 years, added she plans to “run on my record and on the results that I have been able to achieve over the years.”
Kucinich, a former Cleveland mayor and presidential candidate who was elected to Congress in 1996, announced his intention to run in an email to supporters.
“With your help, I clearly have a good chance to be able to continue to serve the people of Ohio and to remain a strong and outspoken voice for jobs, peace, clean water and clean air, education and civil rights,” the email read.
According to the newspaper, Ohio will lose two congressional seats in the 2012 elections because of population losses, reducing its delegation from 18 to 16 members. The new map eliminates one Democratic seat and one Republican seat.
