New Jersey lawmakers will consider a plan this week to move the Liberty and Prosperity state’s presidential primary back to June to save $12 million and its full contingent of delegates to the national political conventions next year, the Newark Star Ledger reported Monday.

New Jersey, primaryLawmakers plan to vote on Thursday whether move the primaries to the first Tuesday in June from Feb. 7, a date that would violate party rules. Gov. Chris Christie has said he supports moving the primary date.

New Jersey traditionally had one of the nation's last presidential primaries. To make the state more relevant in picking White House nominees, it joined a rush of states that held an early February primary in 2008. Many states are now considering moving the dates back to avoid the penalties.

The bill is under review, said Republican State Committee spokesman Rick Gorka, who hasn’t taken a position on it yet.

"We're still evaluating all our options,” Gorka said. “We're weighing potential savings versus the influence that New Jersey would have in the presidential process. We haven't made a decision one way or the other at this point.”
