The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating suspected Muslim extremists, outside of city limits, using CIA techniques — and often without the knowledge of local police departments or the FBI, according to a months-long Associated Press investigation.
The department has sent teams of undercover officers into suburban ethnic communities and university campuses to monitor daily activities in bookstores, cafes, bars, and nightclubs, while collecting information on mosque activities using so-called “mosque crawlers.”
The NYPD also monitors food-cart vendors and taxi-cab drivers in New York City since many employed in these sectors are Muslims, according to the AP.
A veteran CIA officer was instrumental to the NYPD operations in “doing everything it can to make sure there’s not another 9/11 here and that more innocent New Yorkers are not killed by terrorists,” police spokesman Paul Browne told the AP. “And we have nothing to apologize for in that regard.”
A CIA spokeswoman said the agency supported the NYPD effort without reservations.
“It should not be a surprise to anyone that, after 9/11, the Central Intelligence Agency stepped up its cooperation with law enforcement on counterterrorism issues or that some of that increased cooperation was in New York, the site of ground zero,” CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood told the AP.
