The United States should go back to taking the lead of NATO’s military attack against Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi, says Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., The Hill reports.

"I never wanted us to step down . . . because the United States is NATO — that’s the reality," McCain told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

McCain traveled to Libya last week and says the rebels need military support that only the United States can supply.

"The rebels, or liberation forces as I like to call them, are badly outgunned," McCain said.

McCain is worried about the possibility of a protracted stalemate.

"A stalemate between both sides . . . would open the door for al-Qaida to come in and to hijack this very legitimate government that’s opposed to Gadhafi."
