A libertarian group leader Monday said the United States should not have supported Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak for the past 30 years, because the billions in military aid spawned anti-American sentiment instead of generating goodwill among Egyptians.

“We need to be asking ourselves as Americans exactly what the Egyptian people are asking themselves: What business does our government have supporting a dictatorship, for 30 years, that the Egyptian people now are finally protesting against,” Jacob Hornberger told Fox News’ Neal Cavuto. “Americans need to be challenging their government, the same way the Egyptians are challenging their dictatorship, that our government has supported.”

Hornberger, president of The Future of Freedom Foundation, also contended that most foreign aid to dictatorship-run governments ends up used against the populace — or lining the leaders’ pockets.

“You end up supporting regimes, all too often, that use that money, that use the military means, the intelligence forces, to oppress the people,” he said. “So you’re generating anger and hatred within a certain class of society, and that anger and hatred is going to be directed, not just against the regime that is doing it to them — rightfully or wrongfully — it is going to be directed [at those] providing the means to do that to them.

“We’ve often argued, Libertarians have, that foreign aid is just a nice sophisticated form of bribery,” Hornberger said. “A lot of it ends up in the pockets, in the Swiss bank accounts, of the dictators.”

Some estimates place Mubarak and his family’s wealth at up to $70 billion. Egypt, which has received tens of billions of dollars in financial assistance over the years, is the fourth-largest recipient of U.S. aid, after Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Israel.
