Kucinich on Libya: NATO or Not, US Still Pays

Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich says even when America relinquishes command of the Libya air campaign to NATO, costs still would be borne by U.S. taxpayers, and he believes “not a dime” should come out of Americans’ pockets. The liberal Democrat made his comments on Fox Business Network Thursday, after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the United States soon would be handing Libyan air command-and-control to NATO.

Kucinich, NATO, Libya, Payment“Everyone needs to understand who NATO is: NATO’s military is funded — at least 25 percent — by the United States,” Kucinich said. “And so when you look at the Obama administration saying it’s passing it off to NATO, it’s still going to be run out of Washington, it’ll still be U.S. tax dollars that are helping to run the operation.

“You know, I didn’t take an oath to defend the U.N., I didn’t take an oath to defend NATO — I took an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution, and the Congress has to OK this,” Kucinich told host Lou Dobbs, noting that U.S. participation in any NATO operation requires congressional approval.

Kucinich — who had recently called the president’s decision to go into Libya without congressional approval an impeachable offense — repeated his contention the Obama administration’s involvement in Libya stretches the limitations of executive power.

“Congress has the first say, according to the Constitution of the United States — the administration and the president didn’t abide by the Constitution,” Kucinich noted. “They know better.

“And whatever Secretary Clinton says, I hope she will acknowledge that the administration moved not only without Congress — but they have to get Congress to approve whatever money goes to NATO,” he continued.

“And frankly, at this point, I’m going to urge members of Congress to make sure that not a dime goes for this intervention in Libya.”
